FREE 1-DAY INTRODUCTION TO FELDENKRAIS
With Andrew Gibbons, GCFP
Sunday July 20th
Open to the Public
(registration info below)
Do you have nagging pains that
persist despite repeated attempts to stretch,
strengthen or other typical means?- Are you curious about the role of attention in helping your body move and feel better?
- Would you like to take advantage of your brain's natural capacity for learning & improvement (what doctor's are calling "neuroplasticity")
This 1-day Introduction to The Feldenkrais Method is the ideal way to learn about, experience and immediately benefit from improving your brain-body coordination. Participants will experience several Awareness Through Movement lessons and hear a brief talk about the scientific roots of the method and how this kind of sensory-motor learning benefits both your body and the entire nervous system. Participants will also watch a demonstration of how Feldenkrais is used one-on-one. This workshop is open to everyone, regardless of age or physical ability.
Andrew Gibbons is one of the founding faculty members of the Feldenkrais Institute of New York and is its Administrative Director.
Andrew maintains a private practice at the Feldenkrais Institute where he works with a diverse population, including those with minor and severe limitations, neurological problems, children, musicians and those with chronic pain. Andrew has presented the Feldenkrais Method for doctors, physical and occupational therapists at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan and at the Doctoral PT program of SUNY Medical School, for musicians in the Manhattan School of Music’s Wellness Program and in public programs sponsored by the NY Department for the Aging. He trained and continues to work closely with David Zemach-Bersin, one of Dr. Feldenkrais first and foremost American students. Andrew is a graduate of Columbia University (BA), the Manhattan School of Music (MM), is a trained classical pianist and has worked as a consultant for The New York Times and on the faculty of Physical Therapy & Feldenkrais NYC.

In these structured movement lessons, students typically begin by lying on comfortable cotton mats (lessons can also be done sitting in chairs or standing). Using a combination of guided attention and pleasant, purposeful movement, each lesson systematically and elegantly reveals the essential dynamic relationships in a particular pattern of movement and action. Unlike traditional exercise, where the objective is to burn calories, stretch or train willpower, ATM lessons teach you how to reduce unnecessary muscular effort and improve your awareness of the whole self in action. This emphasis on sensory learning results in movement and vitality that are more flexible, pleasurable and free from aches and pains. The lessons are easy to do, of benefit to everyone, and the results can be extraordinary.
