About "Awareness Through Movement"
In these structured movement lessons, students typically begin by lying on comfortable cotton mats (lessons can also be done sitting in chairs or standing). Using a combination of guided attention and pleasant, purposeful movement, each lesson reveals the essential dynamic relationships in a particular pattern of movement and action. "After years of back problems, the Feldenkrais Method has given me the ability to remain free of pain. They are by far the most effective and pleasurable exercises I have ever done." — Joseph Botkin, MA Unlike traditional exercise, where the objective is to burn calories, stretch or train willpower for its own sake, ATM lessons teach you how to reduce unnecessary muscular effort and improve your awareness of the whole self in action. This emphasis on sensory learning results in movement and vitality that are more flexible, pleasurable and free from aches and pains. The lessons are easy to do, of benefit to everyone, and the results can be extraordinary.
"Two audiences have responded to the value of Feldenkrais's work: people afflicted with physical problems and pain, and those who make their living from beauty or finesse of movement such as musicians, atheletes, dancers, and actors. Feldenkrais watchers and pupils have included violinist Yehudi Menhin, former israeli prime minister David Ben-Gurion, anthropologist Margaret mead, and Dr. karl Pribram, M.D., director of the Neuro-Psychology Laboratories of Stanford University." — Suzanne Laronde, Modern Maturity Awareness Through Movement was developed by Dr. Feldenkrais as a means to re-engage the nervous system in the kind of learning we all do as infants, but later usually abandon. The compositional structure of the lessons creates a conversation of sensing, feeling, resting and moving that engages your whole system in a process where old habits can be replaced by new awareness and skill.
